The first Ohio River Sternwheel Festival took place the weekend after Labor Day in 1976. The brainchild of Harry Robinson and Captains Gene Fitch and Bob Limle, this festival was held to encourage tourism to the Marietta area while preserving the well-known riverboat heritage of our area.
Over the years, the festival has grown tremendously, attracting an estimated 100,000 people to the Marietta area each year. In addition to the 30-35 authentic sternwheel boats that line the riverbank, we offer a full weekend of quality, family-oriented entertainment and the best fireworks anywhere.

The Ohio River Sternwheel Festival is a not-for-profit organization that provides the annual festival free of charge thanks to corporate sponsors, sales of souvenirs, private donations and fundraising events.
Each year, the Ohio River Sternwheel festival draws crowds of up to 100,000 people to Ohio’s oldest city for a party in the streets. At the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, festival-goers enjoy paddle-wheelers, events, and the famous fireworks display.
